Abbase was a historic Syriac-Aramean village located in the Anbart river region, near Diyarbakir (Amid). On May 7, 1915, during the Sayfo genocide, the village’s male population, along with inhabitants from several neighboring Syriac-Aramean hamlets, was systematically massacred.
One of the notorious "AlKhamsin" death squads perpetrated this atrocity at the direct instigation of the feudal landlord, Qasem Bey. According to survivor testimonies, 114 Syriac-Aramean men from these villages were killed in the attack. Following the massacre, the surviving women and children were exploited for forced agricultural labor. Once the harvest season concluded, these survivors were presented with a final ultimatum: forced conversion to Islam or immediate execution, marking a tragic erasure of the local Syriac-Aramean presence.
