Arameans

Commentary on Luke 4:27

"And know this: Naaman, a man from the nations, was an Aramean, in Greek, instead of Aramean it is written Syriac."

An astonishing passage from Moses bar Kepho (d. 903) hits two birds with one stone and debunks two claims against the Arameans.

First, it refutes the claim that Aramean means pagan by distinguishing ܥܡ̈ܡܐ (nations, Gentiles) from ܐܪܡܝܐ (Aramean). Second, it equates Suryoyo (ܣܘܪܝܝܐ) with Aramean.

Naaman was thus described as a Gentile/pagan Aramean, that is, a Syriac.
