Arameans

Oromoyutho bKthove Atiqe dAbohothaydan

“It is also right that baptized children be named with the names of saints and martyrs, according to the ancient tradition of our Aramean Suryoyo Orthodox fathers, and even with Syriac names like their fathers.”

Mor Ephrem Suryoyo

"May myriads of tongues give thanks for our country,
in which Abraham and his son Jacob walked,
Sarah, Rebecca, Leah and Rachel too,
even the eleven chiefs of the tribes."

Direct reference to the land of Aram (Paddan-Aram of the Bible).

Mor Jacob d-Serug

"[The Patriarch] Jacob and [the apostle] Addai were sent to Aram-Nahrin, so that they would fulfill both the New and Old (Testament words)."

"Addai himself, too, came to the land of Beth Oromoye, so that these symbols drawn by Jacob would be fulfilled through him. And (so) in Edessa he opened up a big fountain of living waters." Edessa=Beth Oromoye.

"Two precious pearls, which were an ornament for the bride of my lord Abgar, son of the Arameans."

About the destruction of Omid (Diyarbakir): "Who has a heart of stone that would not be moved to bitterness over the destruction of the daughter of the Arameans?"

About Mor Ephrem Suryoyo: "He who became a crown for the entire Arameandom (Oromoyutho), by him we have been brought close to spiritual beauty. This man was the master orator among the Suryoye; all teachers since have been enriched by him."

Mor Jacob d-Urhoy

“Likewise, we (khnan) Arameans, that is to say Suryoye, because of our closeness..."

“Heaven (shmayo), and all that we call ‘heaven’ (shmayo), is not of our speech, of us (dilan) Arameans, that is, the language of Mesopotamians..."

"It appears that the south was so named also by us Arameans. But as for the north, it is not known to us why it was called (such) by the ancient sons of Aram."

"And it is translated into our language—that is, that of us Arameans, who are Suryoye—as 'the Being.'"

“So then, this noun kyōnō, as we Suryoye—that is, Arameans—express it, is derived from “natural/capable” (m’eḳan).

Mor Dionysius Bar Salibi

"As for us Suryoye, we descend from Shem, and our father is Kemuel, son of Aram; from this name, Aram, we are sometimes called in the Books by the name Arameans. We are called Suryoye after Syrus, who built Antioch and its district, and the country was named after him, Syria."

"Because of their hatred, they (the Greeks) call us Jacobites instead of Suryoye. In response, we say that the name Suryoyo, which you have taken from us, is superior, for it comes from Syrus, who ruled over Antioch, and the land was named Syria after him—just as your name, Greek, comes from Javan the pagan. However, we are the descendants of Aram, and in ancient times, we were called Arameans after his name."

Mor Michael Rabo

”The kingdoms which have been established in antiquity by our (dilan) race, (that of) the Arameans, namely the descendants of Aram, who were called Suryoye." (Tub yad Aloho kuthbinan ‘al uhdono d-malekwotho da-hway b-zabno ‘atiqo men umtho dilan Oromoye awkith bnay Orom ethqriw Suryoye.)

"Arameans controlled the land of Aram, and they are called Suryoye by the Greeks."

"The children of Shem are the Assyrians, the Chaldeans, the Ludians, and the Arameans, who are the Suryoye, the Hebrews, and the Persians."

"All those who spoke our language, that of us (dilan) Arameans, were called Suryoye."

Bar Hebraeus

"I thank You, God the Father, who brought me from non-existence into existence, and by Your grace have led me to the knowledge of Your greatness... You did not corrupt me with barbaric, pagan astrology, but instead brought me to the eloquent Syriac-Aramean nation."

"From Aram, meaning Syria, we say 'Aramean', meaning 'Suryoyo', with a Zqopho on the Olaph, Rish, and Mim."
